Functions

  • To develop the government's socio-economic development policy into detailed work pan to be implemented.
  • To develop the Mining Law into regulations for inspecting and monitoring mineral development activities.
  • To assist the EM to negotiate all miming contracts and release prospect ion, exploration and mining licenses.
  • To promote investment in the mineral sector .
  • To undertake mineral exploration and select mineral resources which are considered economically and socially strategic to Lao national development for evaluating their potential.
  • To maintain geological data and provide to local and foreign institution.
  • To undertake and provide geological services such as mineral exploration and analytical services.
  • To cooperate with concerned local and foreign agencies at department.

 

 

 

 

 

 

DGM ACTIVITIES IN 2007

1. Geological mapping

            2.1 Geological Mapping and Mineral investigation inNorth- Laos at scale 1:200 000 under the bilateral

coorperation programme between Loa PDR and SR Vietnam has been carried out since 2001 and completed this year. In 2007 , 5000km2 covering part of Louangnamtha, Bokeo and Houaphan Province has been mapped and report on geological mapping and mineral investigation in North-Laos at scale 1:200 000 has been complied

            2.2 Geological Mapping and Mineral investigation in Sayaboury province at scale1:200 000 under the

 Lao-Thai bilateral cooperation has been conducted Since 2005.

            2.3 Under JICA grant- aid project, geological mapping at 1:200 000 scale in Attapeu province( South-Laos ) has been conducted. Major survey work in 2007 includes sites investigation, route mapping, outcrop description, date in put, etc........

 

2. Mineral prospecting

            Project on prospecting of Bauxite and other Minerals in south in Laos( Xekong, Champasak, Attapeu Province ).

            Potental bauxite deposits have been investigated Dakchung deposite ( Xekong Province ), Dakbok deposite ( Attapeu Province ) and paksong deposit ( Champasak Province ).

            Results of the implementation of the project show that there are copper, zinc, gold and other mineral occurrences in this project area.

 

3. Mining Concession Management:

            Mining in dustry in Lao PDR has been very rapidly growing in the cats 5 years.

Up to end of March 2008 there are 98 companies (59 foreign and 39 local ) holding licenses for mineral prospecting , exploration and mining .There are investing in 169 projects. Mineral production value increased for 190 millions USD (equal to 4% of 6DD)in 2005 to millions USD ( equal to 10% of 6DD ) in 2006 .

            Major minerals produced are gold, silver, copper, zinc, tin, barite, gypsum and coal. some articles of Mining law promulgated in 1997 are under revision for improvement, regulations on artisanal gold mining are under drafting

 

4. Geo in formation Management

- Construction of a more systematic GIS database system of geo logical and mineral data (on going) .

            - Produce Lao Mineral yearbook 2006 .

            - Enter SANGIS bibliographic data .

            - Update mining concession area map.

            -  Improve rock and Mineral Museum, Which has been officially opened to the public since 2005 .

5. Geochemical Analysis.

            Analysis of a total of .....samples from DGM projects and private projects was to

2005 due to increase of Mineral investment in Lao PDR.

           

 6. International Cooperation .

            - Working visit of high rankling officials of the Ministry of land and resources

(China) lead by him .Liyuan, Vice-Mineral investigation of industry and handicraft

(17- 22 April  2006).

            - Technical cooperation with the Department of Geology and Mineral Resources

of Vietnam:

            v Project on Geological Mapping and Mineral investigation of North-Laos at

scale 1=200 000 (2001-2006)

            v Project on prospecting of bauxite and other minerals in South-Laos (2005-2007)

-         Technical cooperation with Department of mineral resources of Thai land:

v Geological and mineral mapping on 1: 200 000 scale of Saiyabouli province.

v Improvement of rock and Mineral Museum.

v Organizing a seminar on “Mineral potential and Development of opportunity

in Laos PDR” in Bangkok.

-         UNIDO:

Cooperation on removal of barriers to the introduction of cleaner artisan gold

mining and extraction technology.

-         World Bank

v Study on sector plan for sustainable development of mining industry (2005-2006)

v Monitoring and Evaluation of benefit streams and other impacts in natural

resources operation (2006-2008).

-         JICA:

v Geological mapping and mineral information service project for promotion of

mining industry in Lao PDR.
